So how can you use the matrix?
Some examples are:
Job descriptions: identify the main tasks and the corresponding level of proficiency and customize the text and wording to suit your company’s vocabulary.
Distribution of responsibilities between MSL-MA: the tasks described are all the things that need to be done by the Medical Affairs Department. You will need to distribute the tasks between your MSLs, Medical Advisors and Medical Managers, in order to be successful as a department. This document can facilitate this discussion and may uncover gaps you have in your team’s resources and capabilities
Build a development plan for your team: use the document to describe the levels of proficiency you expect from each of the roles in your team. At the same time, have your team map out their own proficiency levels. Use the outcomes to do a GAP analysis and determine where extra development is needed.
Build a development plan for yourself: look at the proficiency levels that are expected from each of the roles in your team and use this to determine what development is needed for you to be successful at your current position, but also what you need to learn or what experience you need to gain, in order to be ready for your next step.
***The document was built in collaboration with over 25 MSLs, MAs and Medical Directors from different companies in the Netherlands, as a project for the Dutch Association of Pharmaceutical Medicine (NVFG).
The process was designed and led by Maaike Addicks and Corrie Kroeze.
